We did a day trip today from Skamokawa out to the Port of Ilwaco.
Our first stop was lunch at a seafood restaurant called Imperial Seafood (right behind where I was standing to take the photo above). We had an assortment of shrimp & hushpuppies, fish & chips, and oysters & chips (and hushpuppies), and everything was great. Crispy, light batter (and no trans fat in the frying oil they use).

After lunch we walked up and down the little waterfront street, ending up at Jessie's Fish Market.
We picked up four whole cooked crabs and will have some of that deliciousness for dinner tonight. Here's a shot of the counter I snapped while we were waiting:
After that we wanted to check out the campground at Cape Disappointment State Park for future camping expeditions and wow there are some great sites there! We'll be back. We parked and wandered around for a while out on the seawall and watched a ship coming in past the Columbia Bar, saw some porpoises, sea lions, pelicans, jellyfish, gorgeous scenery, two lighthouses, fishermen…not disappointing at all.
This ship was coming in while we were standing out on the jetty, and as we were passing the Astoria port on the way home we could see it across the river. We'll probably see it pass by our campsite later on.
You can't see (or hear) them, but there were about 6 sea lions fishing in the surf in the photo below, occasionally barking loudly. Pretty great.
After Cape Disappointment, everyone wanted to make sure we stopped at Dismal Nitch on the way home. Surprisingly pretty there.
Back toward Skamokawa we took a short detour to see (and drive through) the Grey's River Covered Bridge.
A great last day to have camping with Larra and Ari!
